Historic Buildings completed at Bow Road

Introduction:

Many historic buildings along the High Street 2012 route have fallen into a state of disrepair, lost their architectural features and have often undergone unsympathetic modernisations.  As a key High Street 2012 ‘street action’, clusters of especially important historic buildings in strategic Conservation Areas have been targeted for improvements.

At Bow, a cluster of around 13 historic buildings running from 161 to 199 Bow Road, north of Bow Church benefit from restoration work.

The works will be funded by Tower Hamlets Council and English Heritage.

This restoration work began in March 2011 and was completed in December 2011.

Challenges

The buildings suffered from ageing, the main road and a lack of maintenance and the team appointed to restore the Bow Road cluster – Julian Harrap Architects and Paye Stonework & Restoration – worked to address numerous issues affecting the buildings, such as:

  • crumbling pointing
  • peeling paintwork
  • cracked render
  • eroded brickwork
  • the loss of original timber sash windows
What's Been Done:

Work carried out concentrated on the front elevations and parts of the building that face the high street.

Following detailed discussion and site visits with the building owners, the restoration works were agreed, in accordance with the Conservation Area guidance and the sensitivities of listed buildings.

The restoration tackled all of the challenges posed by the buildings through conservation repair, replacement of key architectural features, new sash windows and a repaired shopfront.

The impact of this cluster will bring the benefits of the western side of High Street 2012 to the east, and act as a historic gateway to Bow roundabout and Stratford High Street.

Beyond the improvements to the buildings themselves, the historic Bow streetscape will be greatly enhanced for local people, commuters and 2012 visitors alike.
